Echocardiogram
A painless ultrasound that shows your heart in motion.
What it is
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of your heart. It uses safe sound waves - the same technology used to image babies before birth - to create moving pictures of your heart's chambers, valves, and walls. There are no needles and no radiation.
Why your doctor may order it
To check how well your heart is pumping
To investigate a heart murmur
To look into symptoms like shortness of breath or chest discomfort
To follow up on a known heart condition
What to expect
Arrival
Check in at reception with your health card and referral; a sonographer will greet you shortly after.
During the test
You'll lie on your side while a sonographer applies a little warm gel and moves a smooth handheld probe across your chest. You may hear a whooshing sound - that's your blood flow, and it's normal.
Duration
Most echoes take about 30 to 45 minutes.
After
There's no recovery time needed - you can return to your day immediately.
