What to Expect During an Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram is one of the most common cardiac tests — and one of the easiest to prepare for. If you have an appointment coming up, here's exactly what the visit will look like.

Before your appointment

No fasting or special preparation is required. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, and continue taking your usual medications unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

During the test

You'll rest on your side on an exam table while a sonographer moves a gel-covered probe gently across your chest. The probe sends sound waves that bounce back to create a live, moving image of your heart's chambers, valves, and walls — no needles, no radiation, and no pain.

How long it takes

Plan for about 30 to 45 minutes for the full appointment, including check-in.

Patients are often surprised by how ordinary the experience feels — much like a routine ultrasound, just focused on the heart.

After your test

There's no recovery time. You can drive yourself home and resume all normal activities immediately. A cardiologist reviews your images, and a report is typically sent to your referring physician within a few business days.
